5 Possible Causes of Spotting During Early Stages of Pregnancy and What Should You Do?

6:00 AM
You have just found out that you are pregnant yet there is bleeding of the vaginal. Why does this happen and what should you do? Light spotting during early stages of pregnancy is a common symptom but it can be nerve-racking for most mothers-to-be.

Spotting is very light bleeding of the vaginal that is pink to red brown in colour. It looks about the same colour as when it was at the beginning or end of your regular monthly menstruation. Generally, light spotting during early stages of pregnancy occurs frequently and some of the causes could be due to:

(1) Implantation Bleeding
This happens when the fertilized egg implants itself onto the uterus lining which can trigger a few days of spotting, often even before you know you are pregnant.

(2) Sexual Intercourse
You may see some light spotting after sex as during intercourse, more blood will flow to the cervix.

(3) Pap Smear
An internal examinations or a pap smear will result in more blood going to your cervix and cause some light spotting which may be unrelated to pregnancy.

(4) Urinary Tract Infection
Any inflammation to the cervix can make it prone to spotting.

(5) Miscarriage or Ectopic pregnancy.
If the bleeding is heavier together with abdominal pains and cramps, this can be signs of a threatened miscarriage or even ectopic pregnancy.

What should you do?
It may be "normal" per se to have spotting during early stages of pregnancy but if you experience any, throughout any stage of your pregnancy, it is important to consult your doctor immediately. This is especially so when you feel the bleeding to be anything more than "light spotting". Trust your instincts.

Your doctor will usually do some physical checks, blood tests or ultra sound scans when you have spotting during early stages of pregnancy, to make sure the baby is fine. Meanwhile, ensure you rest and do not continue to exert yourself or do any form of exercises. Drop your housework too!
